Bjelovar Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Saint Teresa of Avila, is a striking landmark in the heart of Bjelovar, Croatia. Situated on Eugen Kvaternik Square and surrounded by a tranquil park, the cathedral’s elegant Baroque architecture and prominent façade make it a focal point of the city’s skyline. Originally built between 1765 and 1770 by Czech Piarist brothers Hubert and Ignatius Admiring, the church was blessed on October 15, 1772—fittingly, the feast day of its patron saint, St. Teresa of Avila.

For over two centuries, the church served as a parish before being elevated to cathedral status in 2009 with the establishment of the Diocese of Bjelovar-Križevci. The cathedral can accommodate around 1,000 worshippers and features underground burial corridors, though only a few individuals have been interred there. Notable renovations followed the 1880 Zagreb earthquake, with architect Hermann Bollé overseeing significant restoration in 1888 and further interior updates in 1896.

Visitors are welcome to explore the cathedral at any time, as it is open 24/7 year-round. Inside, you’ll find beautifully preserved church furniture and a peaceful atmosphere ideal for reflection. Most guests spend less than an hour here, making it an easy addition to a day spent exploring Bjelovar’s city center. Whether you’re drawn by its history, architecture, or spiritual significance, Bjelovar Cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting this charming Croatian city.
