Balbi’s Arch stands as a prominent gateway to Rovinj’s old Venetian Quarter, inviting visitors to step into the heart of the town’s historic center. Erected in the 17th century on the site of the original fortified town gate, the arch commemorates Mayor Daniel Balbi and reflects Rovinj’s centuries-long ties to the Venetian Republic. The structure itself is rich in detail: on one side, the head of a Turkish figure is carved, while the opposite side features an Italian head, symbolizing the diverse influences that have shaped Rovinj’s history. Above the arch, the Venetian Lion of St. Mark is clearly visible, a reminder of the town’s peaceful acceptance of Venetian rule, and the Balbi family coat of arms is also present.

Balbi’s Arch is located at Trg G. Matteottija and serves as the main entrance to the old town, making it a natural starting point for exploring Rovinj’s narrow, winding streets and nearby landmarks such as the Municipal Palace and the Church of St. Euphemia. The arch is accessible at all hours and there is no admission fee, allowing visitors to linger and appreciate its architectural details. The surrounding area is lively, with a blend of Romanesque and Baroque architecture, small squares, and local shops, offering a sense of Rovinj’s layered past and vibrant present.
