Baredine Cave, located near Motovun in Istria, Croatia, is a fascinating destination for those interested in natural wonders and local history. Shaped over millennia by the action of water, the cave features a series of impressive underground chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique formations. Guided tours take visitors on a 40-minute journey through the cave’s cool interior, which maintains a steady temperature of 14°C—making it a refreshing escape during the summer months.

One of the highlights of Baredine Cave is the chance to see the cave olm, or “čovječja ribica,” an endemic aquatic creature that inhabits the cave’s subterranean pools. The site also includes a display of historical farm machinery and objects, offering insight into the region’s agricultural heritage.

The cave is open to visitors from April 1st to October 31st, with daily hours varying by season: 10 AM to 4 PM in April and October, 10 AM to 5 PM in May, June, and September, and 10 AM to 6 PM in July and August. During the winter months, visits are available by prior arrangement only. Admission is €12 for adults, €8.50 for children aged 5–15, and free for children under 4. Comfortable shoes and a warm jacket are recommended for the tour. Baredine Cave offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural context, making it a must-see for visitors to Istria.
