Castle of Soardo-Bembo
16th-century Gothic-Renaissance castle in Bale
The Castle of Soardo-Bembo stands as the architectural centerpiece of Bale, Croatia, drawing visitors with its striking Gothic-Renaissance façade and rich historical legacy. Built in the early 16th century, the castle originally served as a fortified residence for the Soardo family. Its strategic location above the town gate, flanked by two defense towers, reflects its origins as a defensive stronghold. In 1618, the castle passed to the Bembo family following the marriage of Veronica Soardo and Alvise Bembo, marking a new chapter in its history.
Today, the castle is the largest building in Bale and has been transformed from a fortress into an elegant residential palace. A complete renovation in 2012 restored its impressive exterior and revealed artifacts from a Bronze Age settlement in the basements, adding another layer to its historical significance. Visitors are invited to explore the castle’s architecture and enjoy views over the old town’s winding streets.
The castle is open to the public from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and is closed on weekends. Its central location at Castel ul. 1 makes it easy to combine a visit with a stroll through Bale’s charming old town or a meal at a local restaurant. The Castle of Soardo-Bembo offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past and is a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts.
