Gothic-Romanesque cathedral with historic frescoes

7.1/10
#1 of 3 in Đakovo

The Cathedral of St. Peter in Đakovo is one of Croatia’s most impressive and beloved landmarks, standing as a testament to the region’s rich religious and cultural heritage. Built between 1866 and 1882, this striking cathedral dominates the skyline of Đakovo with its soaring 84-meter towers and a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic Revival architecture. The project was initially designed by Viennese architect Karl Rösner and later completed by Friedrich Schmidt, a renowned master of Gothic design.

Commissioned by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the cathedral is celebrated for its lavish interior, adorned with vibrant frescoes and sculptures. The frescoes were originally intended to be painted by the acclaimed Nazarene artist J.F. Overbeck, but after his passing, his disciples completed the work, resulting in a richly decorated space that inspires awe in visitors. Pope John XXIII once praised Đakovo Cathedral as “the most beautiful cathedral between Venice and Istanbul,” and it remains a vital center of spiritual and cultural life in Slavonia.

Visitors can admire the cathedral’s grand façade, intricate stonework, and the peaceful atmosphere inside, making it a must-see for anyone interested in art, history, or architecture. While specific opening hours and admission fees are not widely published, the cathedral is generally open to the public and serves as a focal point for both worship and tourism in Đakovo.
