Cathedral of St. Philip and St. James
14th-century cathedral with iconic white bell tower
The Cathedral of St. Philip and St. James is a striking landmark in the heart of Novi Vinodolski, Croatia, and a must-see for visitors exploring the town’s historic core. Likely built in the 14th century, the cathedral stands on a plateau overlooking the Adriatic, its distinctive white stone bell tower rising 36 meters above the old stone streets. The bell tower, completed in 1911, is a defining feature of the cityscape and can be seen from miles around.
Originally serving as the cathedral for the Diocese of Modruš or Krbava from 1493 to 1969, the church is steeped in history. It was constructed on the site of a votive church dedicated to Saints Fabian and Sebastian, which local legend says was built in just 24 hours as a plea for protection from the plague. Inside, the cathedral boasts a richly decorated interior, including valuable woodcarved choir stalls from the late 17th century—considered significant works of art.
Photography is not permitted inside, and visitors are asked to dress respectfully. The cathedral is open to visitors on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, and on Sundays from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, but is closed on Saturdays and Mondays. Whether you’re drawn by faith, history, or architecture, the Cathedral of St. Philip and St. James offers a peaceful and inspiring stop in Novi Vinodolski.
