13th-century palace with Gothic-Renaissance blend

9.2/10
#3 of 7 in Trogir

Cipiko Palace is a striking architectural landmark in the heart of Trogir, Croatia, situated directly across from the Cathedral of Saint Laurentius on the town’s central square. Originally constructed in the 13th century as the residence of the influential Cipiko family, the palace reflects the layered history of Trogir through its blend of Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance styles—each added during various expansions over the centuries.

The palace’s most distinctive feature is its elegant triangular arched balcony on the first floor, designed by the renowned sculptor Andrija Aleši. The main entrance is equally notable, adorned with the Latin inscription “Nosce te ipsum” (“Know Thyself”), inviting visitors to reflect as they admire the building’s ornate stonework and decorative details. Although the interior of Cipiko Palace is not open to the public, the well-preserved facade offers plenty to appreciate for those interested in art, history, and architecture.

Standing in the UNESCO-listed historic center of Trogir, Cipiko Palace is surrounded by narrow cobbled streets and other medieval landmarks, making it a natural stop on any walking tour of the city. The palace is open year-round and can be viewed at any time, allowing visitors to enjoy its beauty both day and night. A visit here provides a glimpse into the grandeur of Trogir’s noble past and the artistic achievements of the Dalmatian coast.
