Greeting to the Sun
Solar-powered light circle symbolizing the solar system
The Greeting to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu) is one of Zadar’s most iconic and innovative attractions, located at the northwestern tip of the Old Town, right by the waterfront and adjacent to the famous Sea Organ. Designed by architect Nikola Bašić and officially opened in 2008, this striking installation consists of 300 multi-layered glass solar panels arranged in a 22-meter diameter circle, set flush with the stone-paved promenade. Surrounding the main circle are smaller panels representing the planets of the solar system, each positioned to scale in both size and distance.
During the day, the solar panels absorb sunlight, and as dusk falls, the installation comes alive with a mesmerizing light show. The panels illuminate in vibrant colors and shifting patterns, simulating communication with nature and symbolizing the harmony between technology and the environment. The spectacle is especially captivating at sunset, when the sky’s natural colors blend with the glowing lights beneath your feet, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
The Greeting to the Sun is not only a visual marvel but also a symbol of Zadar’s modern spirit and its connection to the natural world. It is free to visit and open at all hours, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists to gather, relax, and enjoy the views of the Adriatic and nearby islands. Whether you’re a fan of contemporary art, technology, or simply looking for a memorable place to watch the sunset, the Greeting to the Sun is a must-see in Zadar.
