Kopački Rit Nature Park
One of Europe's largest and best-preserved wetlands
Kopački Rit Nature Park, set in the heart of Baranja near the confluence of the Drava and Danube rivers, is one of Europe’s largest and most pristine wetlands. Spanning 177 square kilometers, the park is a haven for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape into a world of water, reeds, and wildlife. Established as a protected area in 1976 and recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, Kopački Rit is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including over 260 bird species and around 40 types of fish.
Visitors can explore the park’s unique landscape by foot, bike, or boat, winding through a mosaic of lakes, channels, and floodplain forests. Guided tours and observation towers offer excellent opportunities to spot herons, storks, wild geese, and even white-tailed eagles. The park’s cultural heritage is equally rich—once part of the Belje Manor granted to Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1699, the area features the historic Tikveš castle compound and a former aristocratic hunting palace.
Kopački Rit is open year-round, with each season offering a different perspective on the wetlands’ beauty, from spring migrations to autumn’s golden hues. Whether you’re interested in photography, ecology, or simply enjoying the tranquility of unspoiled nature, Kopački Rit Nature Park is a must-visit destination in eastern Croatia, blending natural wonders with a fascinating historical backdrop.
