Lake Dubrava
Croatia’s largest artificial lake on the Drava River
Lake Dubrava, or Dubravsko jezero, is the largest artificial lake in Croatia, stretching across 17.1 square kilometers in the northern part of the country. Situated primarily within Međimurje and Varaždin Counties, the lake is fed by the Drava River and was created as a reservoir for the Dubrava Hydro Power Plant, which has been in operation since 1989. The nearby village of Donja Dubrava gives the lake its name, while the town of Prelog is the only settlement directly on its shores.
The lake is part of a series of reservoirs along the Drava, connecting with others like Lake Ptuj in Slovenia and Lake Varaždin. Its primary function is hydroelectric power generation, but Lake Dubrava has also become a popular spot for outdoor recreation. Anglers are drawn to its waters for fishing, and the area features a small marina, log cabins, and even an airstrip for powered hang gliders, making it a unique destination for both relaxation and adventure.
While Lake Dubrava does not have a developed tourist infrastructure or specific visitor facilities, its expansive waters and scenic surroundings appeal to those seeking a peaceful escape or a day of fishing. The lake’s history and engineering significance add an interesting dimension for visitors curious about Croatia’s approach to water management and renewable energy.
