Mljet National Park
Saltwater lakes and 12th-century monastery island
Mljet National Park is a stunning natural haven located on the northwest part of Mljet Island, Croatia, and is celebrated for its lush forests, tranquil saltwater lakes, and serene island atmosphere. The park’s centerpiece is the pair of saltwater lakes—Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero—which stretch for about four kilometers and are connected by a narrow channel at Mali Most. The lakes are perfect for swimming, kayaking, and sunbathing, with waters that are often warmer than the open sea.
One of the park’s most unique attractions is the small island of Melita (St. Mary Island), situated in the middle of Veliko Jezero. Here, visitors can explore a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, now home to a café and restaurant, accessible by regular boat services included in the park’s entrance ticket. Well-marked walking and cycling trails wind through the park, offering scenic views of the coastline, forests, and lakes, and bicycles are available for rent in nearby villages.
The park is open daily from April 1st, with hours typically from 9 AM to 5 PM. Tickets can be purchased at entrances in Pomena or at the Information Center by the Great Lake, and the price includes the boat trip to St. Mary Island and parking at Vrbovica. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure or peaceful relaxation, Mljet National Park offers a memorable escape into one of Croatia’s most enchanting island landscapes.
