Museum of Olive Oil
Museum of Istrian olive oil history and tasting
The Museum of Istrian Olive Oil, or Museum Olei Histriae, in Pula offers visitors an engaging introduction to one of Istria’s most important agricultural traditions. Located near the city’s iconic Roman amphitheater, the museum is the only institution in Croatia dedicated solely to the history and culture of olive oil production in the region. Founded by Lorena Boljunčić, an art historian with a personal connection to olive growing, the museum seeks to educate guests about the evolution of olive cultivation and its lasting impact on Istrian life.
Inside the 560-square-meter space, visitors can explore exhibits tracing olive oil’s journey from ancient Roman times to the present day. Displays cover traditional and modern methods of olive growing and oil extraction, highlighting the region’s reputation for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oils. A key part of the museum experience is the tasting area, where guests have the opportunity to sample award-winning Istrian oils and learn to distinguish their unique flavors and aromas.
Guided tours and tastings are available, offering deeper insights into the production process and the cultural significance of olive oil in Istria. The museum also features a shop with a curated selection of local oils and related products, allowing visitors to take a piece of Istrian heritage home. The Museum of Istrian Olive Oil is a must-visit for anyone interested in food culture, history, or the agricultural roots of the region.
