Ozalj Castle
13th-century castle with river views and museum
Ozalj Castle stands dramatically atop a rocky promontory overlooking the Kupa River in the small town of Ozalj, about 66 kilometers from Zagreb. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle is one of Croatia’s more famous historic sites and has played a significant role in the region’s history. Over the centuries, it has been home to several noble families, most notably the Zrinski family in the 17th century. Today, the castle is owned by the "Brethren of the Croatian Dragon" society, which has opened it to the public.
As you explore the castle, you’ll find a small museum and library inside. The museum offers a fascinating collection of artifacts, including items from neolithic and Roman settlements, weaponry from the Ottoman wars, and 18th-century furniture. There are also displays related to the 1991 war, providing insight into more recent Croatian history. English signage throughout the museum makes it accessible for international visitors.
The castle’s architecture and riverside setting provide excellent views and photo opportunities. Visitors typically spend about an hour here, taking in both the exhibits and the scenic surroundings. Admission is modest, usually around 10 to 20 kuna. Ozalj Castle is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, making it a convenient stop for a day trip or a leisurely visit while traveling through central Croatia.
