Parish Church of St. Cross Square (Trg Sv. Križa)
Baroque church with Gothic roots and historic art
The Parish Church of St. Cross stands as a central landmark on Trg Sv. Križa (St. Cross Square) in Vodice, offering visitors a glimpse into the town’s layered history and architectural heritage. Originally built in 1402 and dedicated to St. Cross in 1421, the church has evolved over centuries, reflecting the changing styles and influences of the region.
The current structure owes much of its Baroque character to the Dalmatian master Ivan Skok, who began work on the main altar chapel in 1725. The church was expanded between 1746 and 1749, resulting in a harmonious façade with a Baroque portal, oval windows, and a striking rosette above the entrance. Inside, visitors can find altarpieces painted by Eugenio Moretti Varese in the mid-19th century, depicting the Holy Family, the Heart of Jesus, and saints such as Vinko the Martyr and Stanislav Kostka.
The bell tower, constructed by Dubrovnik builder Vicko Macanović starting in 1752, rises above the square and adds to the church’s distinctive silhouette. The church was consecrated in 1760, and its Romanesque-Gothic holy-water font is a reminder of its medieval origins. While specific visiting hours are not listed, the Parish Church of St. Cross remains a focal point for both locals and travelers, inviting quiet reflection amid Vodice’s vibrant town center.
