Parish Church of St. Juraj (St. George)
Medieval coastal church atop Brseč cliffs
The Parish Church of St. Juraj (St. George) stands at the heart of Brseč, a medieval town perched dramatically on cliffs 160 meters above the Adriatic Sea. As you approach the church, you pass through narrow, stone-paved alleys that wind between centuries-old houses, immersing you in the authentic atmosphere of coastal Istria. The church is one of Brseč’s key sacral landmarks, reflecting the town’s deep-rooted spiritual and cultural traditions.
Much of Brseč’s architecture dates back to the 17th century, and the church itself has seen renovations over the years, notably during the tenure of parish priest Josip Mavrović. While the church’s exterior is simple, its presence is central to the community, and it often serves as a gathering place for local events and religious celebrations.
The surrounding area invites exploration, with other historic sites such as the old castle, the cemetery church, and the birth house of writer Eugen Kumičić—now a library and gallery—close by. Art lovers may also enjoy the open-air gallery of sculptor Ljubo de Karina nearby. From the church, visitors can take in sweeping views of Kvarner Bay and the rugged coastline, making it an ideal spot for quiet reflection or photography. The Parish Church of St. Juraj offers a window into Brseč’s layered history and enduring charm.
