Sokolac Castle
15th-century Frankopan fortress with chapel ruins
Sokolac Castle in Brinje is a striking medieval fortress perched on a small hill, offering visitors sweeping views of the surrounding Lika landscape. Built in the early 15th century by the powerful Dukes of Frankopan, Sokolac once served as a vibrant center of political, commercial, and cultural life in the region. Its strategic importance is underscored by its role as a military stronghold during the Turkish invasions—remarkably, the castle was never conquered despite repeated attacks.
Today, Sokolac Castle is partially in ruins and undergoing repairs, but its most significant structures remain accessible for sightseeing. The imposing entrance tower and the two-storey chapel of the Holy Trinity are highlights, with the chapel featuring an octagonal nave, Gothic elements, and Mannerist altars that reflect the Frankopan family’s influence and taste. A permanent exhibition, “The Noble Town of Sokolac,” is housed in the chapel, offering insights into the castle’s storied past and the legacy of the Dukes of Krk.
Visitors typically spend less than an hour exploring the site, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity for light exercise as they walk up from the nearby parking area. While specific opening hours and admission fees are not widely published, the castle remains a pleasant and rewarding stop for history enthusiasts and travelers passing through Brinje. Sokolac Castle stands as a testament to Croatia’s medieval heritage and the enduring spirit of its noble families.
