Starigrad Fortress (Fortica)
15th-century fortress with panoramic Adriatic views
Starigrad Fortress, known locally as Fortica, towers above the town of Omiš and offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. Built in the 15th century during the Croatian–Ottoman wars, this stone stronghold was designed to protect the local population from Ottoman incursions. Perched 262 meters above sea level on a steep cliff, the fortress commands sweeping views of the Adriatic Sea, the Cetina River, and the rugged mountains that frame the coastline.
Reaching Starigrad Fortress is a rewarding adventure in itself. The hike is moderately challenging, with steep and sometimes slippery paths, but the panoramic vistas from the top make every step worthwhile. Once at the summit, visitors can explore the fortress’s sturdy limestone walls, a two-storey square tower that once served as a lookout and keep, and the inner bailey divided into two levels—features that reflect its defensive purpose and strategic design.
The entrance fee is €3.5 per person, payable in cash. While there are no extensive visitor facilities, the site’s raw beauty and historical significance make it a must-see for anyone staying in Omiš or traveling along the Dalmatian coast. Whether you’re interested in history, photography, or simply enjoying breathtaking views, Starigrad Fortress provides a memorable glimpse into the region’s past and its enduring natural splendor.
