Staro Selo Museum
Open-air museum of 19th-century Zagorje village life
The Staro Selo Museum in Kumrovec is a captivating open-air museum that transports visitors into the rural life of Croatia’s Zagorje region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Set in the picturesque village of Kumrovec—founded in 1435 and famously known as the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito—the museum preserves a collection of traditional “hize” (houses), barns, and workshops, all carefully restored to reflect the era’s authentic architecture and daily routines.
Wandering through the museum’s rustic lanes, you’ll discover exhibits on local crafts, farming, and family life, with informative displays and hands-on workshops that bring the past to life. The museum also features Tito’s childhood home, a bronze statue in his honor, and his former elementary school, offering insight into the early years of one of the region’s most influential historical figures.
Staro Selo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends, closed on Mondays and certain holidays. Admission is €5 for adults, €4 for children and students, and €10.50 for families, with discounts for groups and special categories. Guided tours and educational workshops are available, and an audio guide can be accessed via QR code in several languages.
With its blend of history, culture, and scenic surroundings, the Staro Selo Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in Croatia’s rural heritage and the story of Kumrovec.
