Statue of the Girl with the Seagull
Iconic 1956 statue overlooking Kvarner Bay
The Statue of the Girl with the Seagull, known locally as "Maiden with the Seagull," is one of Opatija’s most recognizable landmarks. Situated on a rocky promontory along the scenic Lungomare promenade, the statue gazes out over Kvarner Bay, offering visitors a picturesque spot for photos and a moment of quiet reflection by the sea. The location is especially popular for its sweeping views of the Adriatic and the boats drifting in the distance, making it a favorite stop for both locals and tourists.
Created by sculptor Zvonko Car in 1956, the statue replaced an earlier monument, the "Madonna del Mare," which was originally erected as a memorial to Count Arthur Kesselstadt, who drowned in a storm near this very spot in 1891. The original Madonna statue, damaged over time, has since been restored and is now displayed in the Croatian Museum of Tourism, with a gilded replica standing in front of St. James Church.
The Girl with the Seagull has become a symbol of Opatija, embodying the town’s blend of history, art, and coastal charm. There are no admission fees or set opening hours, and the statue is easily accessible from the promenade, inviting visitors to pause and enjoy the iconic view at any time of day.
