Žitnica Mountain Lodge, perched at 815 meters on Japetić in Zagreb County, is a welcoming retreat for hikers and nature lovers exploring the Samobor and Žumberak mountains. Built between 1951 and 1955 by the Jastrebarsko Hiking Society, the lodge sits on a scenic meadow just southwest of Japetić peak, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and woodlands.
The lodge features a spacious dining room, kitchen, terrace, and three bedrooms with a total of 21 beds, providing comfortable accommodation for overnight guests. It is open on Friday afternoons, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and by appointment, making it a convenient stop for weekend hikers and those planning longer treks. Visitors can enjoy simple meals and drinks, and the lodge also sells mountaineering literature, maps, and guides for the area.
Žitnica serves as a starting point for several popular hiking routes, including the Šoićeva Kuća and Vrh Japetić loops, which cater to intermediate and expert hikers. The lodge is accessible via a macadam road from Sveta Jana or by car from Samobor or Jastrebarsko, and it is part of the Karlovac Bypass and the Circular Mountaineering Route through the Samobor Hills.
