Bigatto Palace
Venetian palace housing Buzet’s heritage museum
Bigatto Palace, standing in the heart of Buzet’s old town, is a striking example of Venetian architecture and one of the most significant historical landmarks in the region. Built in the 16th century and completed in 1639, the palace once served as the seat of the Rašpor Captaincy, a key military command during the Venetian era. Its design reflects the transition from Mannerism to Early Baroque, with a stately façade that hints at its former importance as a fortress and administrative center.
Today, Bigatto Palace houses the Heritage Museum of Buzet, which opened in 1961 and offers a fascinating journey through the cultural and historical heritage of Buzeština. The museum’s diverse collections include prehistoric and Roman artifacts, a lapidarium, and exhibits on traditional agriculture, folk costumes, and local crafts. Visitors can also explore a historical kitchen, learn about the anti-fascist battle of Buzeština, and discover the region’s unique Glagolitic script. The museum’s gallery hosts rotating art exhibitions, adding a contemporary dimension to the experience.
Beyond the palace itself, the old town of Buzet features additional attractions such as a smithy, bakery, and horn comb workshop, all contributing to the area’s authentic atmosphere. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or local traditions, a visit to Bigatto Palace offers a memorable insight into the rich tapestry of Istrian culture.
