Church of St. George (Crkva sv. Jurja)
17th-century church with Venetian art in Buzet
The Church of St. George (Crkva sv. Jurja) stands proudly at the highest point of Buzet’s old town, offering visitors both a spiritual and historical highlight in this Istrian hilltop community. Completed in 1611 under the direction of Captain Marco Antonio Erizzo, the church’s current layout features a simple longitudinal interior with an elevated apse, creating a sense of grandeur and tranquility within its walls.
Inside, the church is richly adorned with movable inventory from the 17th and 18th centuries, including gilded altars and paintings that reflect the artistic influences of the Venetian masters. Notably, the church houses works depicting the life of St. Anthony, attributed to Tiepolo, and painted medallions by Matto Furlanetto, which were added during a significant reconstruction at the end of the 18th century.
Extensive conservation and restoration efforts, led by the Croatian Conservation Institute from 2002 to 2012, have helped preserve the church’s remarkable interior and its collection of historic artworks. The church’s position at the edge of the old town also provides scenic views over the surrounding cliffs and valley, making it a rewarding stop for both art lovers and those seeking panoramic vistas.
While specific opening hours and admission fees are not listed, the Church of St. George remains a central cultural and architectural landmark in Buzet, inviting visitors to explore its storied past and serene atmosphere.
