Lokvarsko Jezero, or Lake Lokve, is an artificial lake nestled in the forested landscape of Gorski Kotar, about 30 kilometers east of Rijeka and near the village of Lokve. Created in the 1950s by damming the Lokvarka River, the lake spans roughly 2.5 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 40 meters. It is surrounded by tranquil coniferous forests and the villages of Homer, Mrzla Vodica, and Zelin Mrzlovodički, with the northern edge of Risnjak National Park nearby.

Lake Lokve is a hub for outdoor recreation throughout the year. Visitors enjoy hiking and biking along its scenic shores, swimming in the clear waters during summer, and fishing for species such as chub, carp, and trout. The lake is famous among anglers, notably for the record-breaking brown trout caught here in 1968, and again in 1973, when a 25.4-kilogram trout set a world record. The lake also hosted the first underwater orientation world championship, adding to its sporting legacy.

A lakeside restaurant, “Eva,” offers local cuisine with picturesque views, making it a pleasant spot to relax after exploring. While the lake’s water levels can vary and it may occasionally be drained, Lokvarsko Jezero remains a top-rated attraction for those seeking nature, tranquility, and a taste of Gorski Kotar’s outdoor life. There are no set opening hours or admission fees, allowing for flexible visits.
