Medvedgrad Castle
Medieval fortress atop Medvednica mountain
Medvedgrad Castle, perched on the southern slopes of Mount Medvednica above Zagreb, is a captivating blend of medieval history, scenic views, and local legend. Built in 1242 to defend the city from Tatar invasions, the fortress has stood for over 800 years and changed hands more than 150 times, each owner adding a new chapter to its rich story. The castle is steeped in myth, most famously the tale of the Black Queen, Barbara of Celje, whose beauty and rumored dark magic are said to haunt the ancient walls and hidden treasures of Medvedgrad.
Today, Medvedgrad is beautifully restored and welcomes visitors eager to explore its towers, ramparts, and the Medvednica Visitor Center. The center offers engaging exhibitions on the natural and cultural heritage of the region, making it a rewarding stop for families, history buffs, and nature lovers alike. Guided tours are available at 11 am, and group visits can be arranged with advance notice.
The castle is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the last entry at 3:00 PM, and is closed on Mondays and select dates in September. Most visitors spend one to two hours wandering the grounds, soaking in panoramic views of Zagreb and the surrounding forests. Whether you’re drawn by the legends, the history, or the breathtaking vistas, Medvedgrad Castle offers a memorable journey into Croatia’s medieval past.
