Parish Church of St. Pelagius and Maximus
Early Christian basilica with Baroque altar
The Parish Church of St. Pelagius and Maximus is one of Novigrad’s most important historical and religious landmarks, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the town’s rich past. Located at Veliki trg 7 in the heart of Novigrad’s old town, the church is believed to have origins dating back to the 6th or 8th century, making it one of the oldest basilicas in the region. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations, most notably in 1408, 1580, 1746, and 1775, which have left their mark in the form of Baroque altars and a Neoclassicist façade completed in 1935.
The church’s interior features three naves and houses remnants of medieval frescoes, as well as early Christian window frames discovered in the north wall. While the original baptistery and episcopal palace were demolished in the 19th century, visitors can still appreciate the architectural evolution of the site. The Romanesque crypt, which contains early medieval ecclesiastical artifacts, is unfortunately not open to the public at this time.
Often referred to as the “Cathedral” by locals, the church stands as a testament to Novigrad’s enduring spiritual and cultural heritage. It is a must-see for anyone exploring the town’s medieval fortifications and picturesque seafront. While specific opening hours and admission fees are not provided, the church is easily accessible and is a highlight of any visit to Novigrad’s charming old town.
