Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary (Župna crkva Uznesenja Marijina)
Historic church with Glagolitic wall writings
The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary (Župna crkva Uznesenja Marijina) stands at the highest point of Hum, Croatia, and serves as a striking symbol of the village’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Established in 1802 on the site of an earlier church, the current building features a classicistic façade with three rectangular openings and two semi-circular niches, giving it a dignified yet welcoming presence. The church’s single-nave hall leads to a large rectangular apse, and its main altar is adorned with a gilded Renaissance wooden structure and a painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Inside, visitors can admire historical chapels, including the 15th-century chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary and the Šegina chapel from 1546. The church is also notable for its Glagolitic wall writings, which date back to the 12th century and offer a rare glimpse into Croatia’s early literary tradition. The first documented mention of the parish and its priest appears in the Statute of the Brotherhood of St. John the Baptist from 1325, underscoring the site’s long-standing importance.
Admission to the church is free, and visitors typically spend about 15 minutes exploring its peaceful interior and appreciating its historical details. Whether you’re drawn by faith, history, or architecture, the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary is an essential stop in the tiny but storied town of Hum.
