Perušić Old Town, often called the Turkish Tower, is a captivating historical site in the heart of Lika, Croatia. This fortress, originally built with a square layout and three watchtowers, stands as a testament to the region’s turbulent past. The tower has survived centuries of conflict, including the Ottoman conquest in the 16th century and later occupation by Crusader troops in the 17th century. Today, only one floor of the original structure remains intact, but ongoing renovations aim to restore its grandeur, including plans for a glass lookout point on the upper level.

Adjacent to the tower is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a medieval Gothic church with a fascinating history. During the Ottoman period, it was converted into a mosque, and its interior still reflects a unique blend of Christian and Islamic influences. After the Ottomans left in the late 17th century, the church returned to Christian worship, and its artistic decorations now offer visitors a rare glimpse into the area’s multicultural heritage.

Perušić Old Town is easily accessible from the A1 highway and is surrounded by the scenic landscapes of Lika, making it an ideal stop for history enthusiasts and travelers exploring central Croatia. While there are no published opening hours or admission fees, visitors are welcome to explore the site and enjoy its panoramic views and rich historical layers.
