Safari Park
Safari Park with exotic and native wildlife
The Safari Park on the Brijuni Islands offers a unique experience within the broader setting of Brijuni National Park in southern Istria, Croatia. Spanning nine hectares, the park is home to a diverse collection of animals, blending native Istrian species with exotic inhabitants from South America, Africa, and Asia. Visitors can encounter Indian elephants, llamas, zebras, Indian sacred cows (zebu), and ostriches, among others, as they explore this distinctive corner of the islands.
The park’s history is as colorful as its animal residents. Notably, the zebras were gifts from Guinea in the 1960s, and the zebu were introduced in 1959 as a present from Indian statesman Nehru. These international connections reflect the Brijuni Islands’ long-standing role as a place of cultural exchange and hospitality.
A highlight of the Safari Park visit is the tourist train, which winds through the grounds and allows guests to view the animals in a relaxed and accessible way. The park’s setting, surrounded by Mediterranean flora and the sea, adds to the sense of being in a truly special environment.
To reach the Safari Park, visitors take a boat from Fažana to Veliki Brijun, the main island, and then follow signs or join a guided tour. The Safari Park is a memorable stop for families, animal lovers, and anyone interested in the unique blend of nature and history found on the Brijuni Islands.
