The Olive Tree on Brijuni, located within Brijuni National Park off Croatia’s Istrian coast, is a living testament to the region’s ancient history and natural beauty. Estimated to be around 1,600 years old, this remarkable tree is one of the oldest olive trees in the Mediterranean, its age confirmed by carbon dating conducted by the Ruđer Bošković Institute in the 1960s. Despite suffering storm damage in the 1970s, which left it split and preserved with concrete, the tree continues to thrive, producing about 30 kilograms of olives each year—enough for roughly 4 kilograms of extra virgin olive oil.

The olive tree stands 6 meters tall and spreads 22 by 8 meters, its lush crown offering a striking silhouette against the park’s landscape. It is a popular stop for visitors exploring Brijuni, who typically spend less than an hour admiring its size and taking in the peaceful surroundings. The tree is accessible year-round, open daily from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM, making it easy to include in any itinerary.

Brijuni National Park itself is steeped in history, from Roman ruins to its days as a retreat for Yugoslav president Tito. The park is accessible by a short boat ride from Fažana, and visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including boat excursions and wine tours. Whether you’re a nature lover, history enthusiast, or simply seeking a tranquil spot, the Olive Tree on Brijuni is a must-see symbol of endurance and Mediterranean heritage.
