The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Refuge (Svetište Gospe od Utočišta) in Aljmaš is a place of deep spiritual and historical significance, nestled along the banks of the Danube River in eastern Croatia. Established over 170 years ago, this Marian shrine is a major pilgrimage destination, drawing more than 100,000 visitors annually to the tranquil fishing village of Aljmaš, about 26 kilometers east of Osijek.

The sanctuary’s story begins in 1704, when a statue of the Virgin Mary was brought to Aljmaš as a symbol of hope during turbulent times. The site has endured repeated adversity, including fire and wartime destruction, but the local community’s resilience has preserved its importance. The current church, dedicated in 2004, features a striking design inspired by Noah’s Ark, and is sometimes called the “Danube Swan” for its elegant silhouette beside the river. The statue of Our Lady, crowned by Pope John Paul II in 2003, remains the focal point for pilgrims and visitors.

Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and rural landscapes, the sanctuary offers a peaceful setting for prayer, reflection, or simply enjoying the view of the Danube. The area is also known for its welcoming family-run farms and local hospitality. While specific opening hours and admission details are not listed, the sanctuary is open to all who seek a moment of quiet or a glimpse into the enduring faith and culture of the region.
