Varaždin Cemetery
Historic park cemetery with iconic sculptures
Varaždin Cemetery, located in the heart of Varaždin, Croatia, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and thoughtfully designed cemeteries in Europe. Established in 1773 and redesigned by landscape architect Herman Haller in 1905, the cemetery is celebrated for its serene, park-like atmosphere. Visitors are greeted by a diverse botanical landscape, with rows of cypress, maple, and birch trees, as well as meticulously clipped Thuja hedges that evoke the elegance of French cemeteries. The grounds feature approximately 7,000 trees, creating a tranquil environment ideal for reflection and quiet walks.
The cemetery is also notable for its unique burial system, where plots can be stacked five or six deep, reflecting the socio-economic history of the region. Among the many monuments, the “Angel of Death” by sculptor Robert Frangeš Mihanović stands out as a poignant symbol of farewell, and the memorial to Vatroslav Jagić is adorned with fresh flowers daily.
Visitors typically spend 1-2 hours exploring the cemetery, which is open year-round with seasonal hours: 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM from December to February, 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM in March, April, and October, and 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM from May to September. The cemetery is a peaceful retreat and a testament to Varaždin’s cultural and historical heritage, making it a meaningful stop for those interested in landscape architecture, history, or simply seeking a moment of calm.
