Velebit Nature Park
Croatia’s largest protected mountain with rich biodiversity
Velebit Nature Park, stretching across 2,200 square kilometers, is Croatia’s largest protected area and a haven for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. Located near the village of Krasno, the park encompasses the dramatic Velebit mountain range and is part of UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Its landscapes are a striking mix of rugged karst formations, deep caves, beech forests, and alpine meadows, supporting a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life—including endemic species like the Velebit degenia.
The park is also home to two national parks, Paklenica and Northern Velebit, and features notable botanical reserves such as Visibaba and Zavižan–Balinovac–Velika kosa. Hiking is a highlight here, with trails like the famed Premužić’s Trail offering panoramic views and a chance to experience the mountain’s wild beauty up close. Visitors are encouraged to stick to marked paths to help preserve the fragile environment.
Cultural heritage is woven throughout the park, with old churches, mountain huts, and watermills dotting the landscape, reflecting centuries of human presence and tradition in the region. The main entrance at Babić Siča is open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, providing information and guidance for your visit.
