Slunj
Riverside town with waterfalls, mills, and adventure sports
Slunj’s history dates back to Roman times, but it flourished in the Middle Ages as a fortified settlement and trading post. The town’s strategic location along ancient routes between the Adriatic and continental Croatia made it a crossroads of cultures and commerce. Over the centuries, Slunj was shaped by Ottoman invasions, Habsburg rule, and the resilience of its people, who built a community centered on the rivers and forests of the Kordun region.
The crown jewel of Slunj is Rastoke, a unique village where the Slunjčica River tumbles over travertine barriers into the Korana, forming a network of waterfalls, rapids, and pools. Traditional wooden watermills, some still in operation, line the riverbanks, and charming stone cottages are connected by wooden footbridges. Visitors can explore the mills, enjoy local cuisine in riverside restaurants, and photograph the enchanting scenery. Guided walking tours reveal the history and legends of Rastoke, while kayak and canoe tours offer a thrilling perspective from the water.
Beyond Rastoke, Slunj’s surroundings are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The Korana and Mrežnica rivers provide opportunities for swimming, fishing, and river rafting, while the forests and hills are crisscrossed with hiking and cycling trails. The nearby Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just a short drive away and makes for an easy day trip. Other attractions include the Spomen park Sokolovac, a memorial park with panoramic views, and the Gradski muzej Požega, which showcases local history and culture.
Slunj’s town center features Holy Trinity Square, historic churches, and lively cafes. The town hosts festivals, markets, and cultural events throughout the year, celebrating local traditions, music, and gastronomy. Regional specialties such as trout, homemade bread, and wild mushroom dishes can be enjoyed in family-run restaurants and guesthouses.
Getting to Slunj is straightforward. The town is located on the main road between Karlovac and Plitvice Lakes, with regular bus connections to Zagreb, Karlovac, and the coast. Ample parking is available, and the compact town center is easily explored on foot. Accommodation options range from hotels and guesthouses to campsites and private apartments, catering to all budgets and preferences.
