Dubrovnik Cathedral and Treasury
Baroque cathedral with 132 saint relics treasury
Dubrovnik Cathedral and Treasury, officially known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a must-see landmark in the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. The cathedral’s striking Baroque dome rises above the city, offering a focal point for visitors exploring the historic streets. Originally built in the late 1100s—thanks in part to a donation from King Richard the Lionheart after his shipwreck near Dubrovnik—the current structure was rebuilt in the 18th century following the devastating earthquake of 1667.
Inside, the cathedral features a serene, high-ceilinged nave and beautiful artworks behind the main and side altars. Entry to the main cathedral is free, making it accessible to all. The real highlight for many visitors, however, is the Treasury, which houses an impressive collection of 132 relics of saints, including ornate reliquaries of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint, crafted by local goldsmiths in the 11th and 12th centuries. The oldest preserved list of relics dates back to 1335, reflecting the city’s deep spiritual and artistic heritage.
The cathedral is open daily, with extended hours in the summer (typically 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and from 11:00 AM on Sundays and holidays). In winter, hours are more limited. Visitors can also request to see the crypt beneath the cathedral. Whether you’re drawn by history, art, or faith, Dubrovnik Cathedral and Treasury offers a memorable window into the city’s storied past.
