Minceta Tower
Highest tower on Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls
Minceta Tower, perched at the highest point of Dubrovnik’s famous city walls, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit for anyone exploring the Old Town. Originally built as a four-sided fort in 1319, the tower was transformed into its current round shape in the early 1460s by renowned architects Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi and Giorgio da Sebenico. With its 6-meter-thick walls and gun ports, Minceta Tower stands as a symbol of Dubrovnik’s resilience, particularly during the Ottoman Empire’s expansion.
Visitors can climb the 750 steep steps to the top of the tower, where they are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s red-tiled rooftops and the sparkling Adriatic Sea. The tower’s strategic position makes it an ideal spot for photography and for taking in the city’s medieval layout. The basement of the tower houses a small museum, adding an educational element to the visit.
Minceta Tower is also a point of interest for fans of the TV series Game of Thrones, as it served as the filming location for the House of Undying. The fortress is open daily from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and admission is included with a ticket to walk the city walls, starting at $67. For the best experience, enter the city walls from the northwest corner and exit near the Pile Gate. Whether you’re a history buff, a photographer, or a pop culture enthusiast, Minceta Tower offers a memorable highlight in Dubrovnik’s storied skyline.
