Stradun
Historic limestone street linking Dubrovnik gates
Stradun, also known as Placa, is the vibrant heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and one of Croatia’s most iconic streets. Stretching 300 meters from Pile Gate to Ploče Gate, this elegant limestone-paved promenade is the main artery of the city, bustling with life from morning until late at night. Once a natural channel separating two medieval settlements, Stradun took on its current form after the 12th century when the area was filled in and later rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1667.
Today, Stradun is lined with beautifully restored stone buildings, charming shops, bustling cafés, and historic landmarks. The polished pavement, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, glistens in the sunlight and adds to the street’s timeless appeal. At the western end, you’ll find Onofrio’s Fountain, a popular meeting spot and a refreshing stop on warm days.
Stradun is more than just a thoroughfare—it’s the stage for Dubrovnik’s major events, from lively festivals and concerts to traditional processions. Exploring the side alleys reveals hidden gems, quiet corners, and a glimpse into daily life in the Old Town. There are no admission fees or set opening hours, so you’re free to wander at your leisure, day or night.
Whether you’re people-watching, shopping for souvenirs, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, a stroll down Stradun is an essential Dubrovnik experience, connecting the city’s rich history with its lively present.
